Real Gravel Private tour

Top Gravel Bike Tour Near Vienna (48 km / 880 m)

Looking for the perfect gravel cycling route close to Vienna? The “Real Gravel” loop is a spectacular 48 km adventure starting from Mödling and winding through lush forests, historic monasteries, hidden mountain trails, and panoramic ridgelines. This ride offers a true escape into the Vienna Woods — ideal for intermediate to advanced gravel riders.

📋 Quick Route Summary

  • Route Type: Loop
  • Start/End: Mödling, Lower Austria
  • Length: 48.3 km
  • Elevation Gain: 880 meters
  • Surface: Forest gravel roads, dirt tracks, short asphalt segments
  • Bike Type: Gravel bike (recommended tires: 35–45 mm)
  • Ride Time: 3.5–5 hours

🗺️ Points of Interest & Natural Highlights Along the Route

1. Mödling – Gateway to the Vienna Woods

Start your ride in the picturesque town of Mödling, just 25 minutes south of Vienna by train. The old town is full of character, featuring narrow alleys, baroque facades, and cozy Heuriger wine taverns. It’s the perfect place to grab coffee before or a glass of local wine after your ride.

2. Föhrenberge Nature Park

Shortly after leaving town, you’ll enter the Föhrenberge Naturpark, part of the larger Wienerwald biosphere reserve. The gravel roads here snake through pine forests (“Föhren” in German) and limestone hills. Expect peaceful woodland, clean air, and the occasional deer crossing your path.

📸 Scenic Spot: Several clearings offer views toward the Vienna basin — perfect for photos or a snack break.

3. Sulz – The Core Climb of the Route

The Sulz climb is the physical highlight: a 2.3 km gravel ascent with an average grade of 8.2%. You’ll zigzag through dense forest on historic paths once used by foresters and hunters. It’s a test of endurance and traction — but well worth the effort.

🌿 Local Fact: This area was part of royal hunting grounds during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Keep an eye out for wooden signs marking old forest boundaries.

4. Heiligenkreuz Abbey (Optional Short Detour)

As you ride through the valley near Sittendorf, you’re only a short deviation away from Stift Heiligenkreuz, one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in the world (founded in 1133). The monastery is still active and offers guided tours, a gift shop, and peaceful cloisters.

Pro Tip: Stop here for a spiritual breather — or to pick up local monastic products like honey and herbal schnapps.

5. Sittendorf – Rustic Austrian Charm

This small, quiet village is nestled among the hills and offers a glimpse into authentic rural Lower Austria. Farmhouses, rolling pastures, and vineyards line your way. In the summer months, local Buschenschank (seasonal taverns) sometimes open here.

6. Wassergspreng & Rückweg via Gießhübl

The route’s return leg features a peaceful gravel segment through Wassergspreng and forest roads leading back toward Gießhübl. This area provides a contrast to the climbs earlier — rolling terrain, winding trails, and shady cover.

🍂 Fun Fact: “Wassergspreng” translates loosely as “water burst” — referencing the area’s springs and underground streams.

7. Final Descent into Mödling

After navigating the last forest sections, you descend gradually back into Mödling. The descent is not technical but fast and fun, with firm gravel and wide turns.

🍷 Celebrate at one of Mödling’s wine taverns with a glass of Grüner Veltliner or a local Brettljause (cold cuts platter).

📍 Getting There & Logistics

  • By Public Transport: Take the ÖBB train from Vienna Hauptbahnhof to Mödling Bahnhof (approx. 25 min).
  • By Car: Free parking available near the Föhrenberge trailhead or Gießhübl.
  • GPX: Download the route from Strava

🛠️ Tips for Gravel Cyclists

  • Gear: Bring extra tubes and tools — mobile signal can be weak in forested zones.
  • Navigation: Use Komoot, Strava, or a bike GPS to stay on track.
  • Food & Drink: Very few shops on the trail — bring snacks and at least 1.5L of water.
  • Best Time to Ride: April to October. Mornings are cooler and ideal for climbing.
